Styfen earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in civil engineering at ETH Zurich. During his Master's studies, he focused in particular on the numerical modelling of building materials and engineering structures.

In the course of two years he worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Building Materials at ETH Zurich. He gained practical experience in the area of wood modification, numerical simulations and high-performance computing. In his Master's thesis, he combined his affinity for wood, computational science and machine learning to develop a quantitative framework for assessing the robustness of tall timber buildings.

Styfen joins the Chair of Risk, Safety and Uncertainty Quantification to work on the European project HIPERWIND, in which he will develop new surrogate models for the simulation of offshore wind turbines.
